Human socialization has always been a factor in the ways humans live their lives. In this project, I wanted to emphasize explore a way of communication through fog technology and with it the naturistic elements that go with it.
The goal was to create an exhibition regarding communication and fog projection.
Part 1: Fog Projection
My Senior Project Thesis, Solitude Friendship is based on the idea of making communication more friendly to people who wish to make communicating a more joyous time. In order to do so, I primarily utilized a fog machine to pump out fog as a way to provide background noise as well provide a nature theme to calm users. LED lights as well as posters were made as a way to provide what home could mean to someone. A projector would beam a video of the contents of the projects onto the wall in front of it.
The video link can be shown here. The video has some crucial portions which includes a 3D model of the accessory chair concept that would complement the nature themed communication concept.
Part 2: Furniture Design
The chair design followed the same philosophy of a more friendly communication through online means. One of the key concepts was defining comfort. Comfort was defined as being in tune with nature, so the pull and power of furniture design was researched.
Furniture design found that lovers of furniture was related to the design and story of the chair. Thus, the kick back chair felt like the perfect option, a chair that may not have the avant-garde design, but provided a textbook story of comfort.
The kick back chair had to be modified to include parts of nature though. Drawing back on the unique volcanic rocks of Jeju and the rich history of Jeju as a relaxation area for Koreans, I included a rock like structure as part of the design of the chair. It was this familiarity that I believe defines comfort for Koreans. For Koreans, vacation and having the ability to relax from the stressful life in the city yet be close to the city is one of the greatest happiness.
The result was the 3D model you can see on the very top.

Inspiration
Communication
The Stonehenge's integration of nature's ability to provide a superb acoustics was the inspiration for the fog technology integration with technology.
The Stonehenge's integration of nature's ability to provide a superb acoustics was the inspiration for the fog technology integration with technology.
A close link found in the analyses of the neighborhoods was the sense separate abodes yet connected in the use of technology within 50 meters or less.
Furniture Culture
Another cultural aspect of the "concept of home" was the role furniture played in defining people.
Furniture design in the modern 21st century provides a means in which for people to express themselves.
Incorporating nature into the narrative of home and the hearth was a key importance injected into this specific design.
Prototyping
Communication
Fog Projection
The first prototype included one fan connected to a ultra sonic humidifier.
The final prototype included 5 fans, a voltage regulator, and a filtering grid for narrowed air flow.
Fog Projection Device Schematics
Exhibit Trial
Using a projector to beam on the downward fog generated by the apparatus, this was a test trial for the exhibit view of the product.
Video
A video was projected on the screen for the intent to allow viewers to understand a glimpse of what the project represents and the story of the project.
