Embryo Speaker
Overall: 140 x 110 mm Bottom: 140 x 55
Top: 140 x 55 mm
Location. Seoul
Category. Industrial Design / 3D Model
Materials. Foam, Ostrich Egg, Modeling Paste, Angel Clay
This project focused on sound and the experience of sound in exploring its look. Drawing on the snow harrow's ability to hear from great distances, the shape of ear was traced and shapes were sketched into the the similar cylinder shape that is present in the final design.
Early Sketches
The early sketches examine ways to incorporate what kind of forms the individual shapes the speaker could form. These shapes were used as a model for the first round of modeling.
Form Process
Mushroom Design: retains height, loses curve of the ear
Twist Design: accentuates curve of the ear, loses the height dimensions
Loop Design: emphasizes the rabbit ear shape, hollows the insides
Curved Design: increases the curve length
Paper Model (based on Loop design)
Prototype Process
Out of the few with reference to what would most likely resemble the shape, the design was chosen in mind with the material being an ostrich egg shell.
A sphere was added into the middle of the inside curve to represent the speaker.
Steps of Making the Prototype Model
1. The Ostrich Egg was cut at the bottom to allow for a pink foam insert at the bottom to create a flat bottom
2. Top outer attachments were made with angel clay
3. Foam circular object was inserted into the curve
4. The egg was lathered in modeling paste
5. The model is spray painted silver.
The final prototype ended up in this way. To further add, a 3D model was made of the object to show the model in its full scale.
