Materials. Squid Ink, Tubes, Foam Skulls, Sticks, String, Plastic Figures, Markers
The piece explores what it means to grow as a person. There were several parts incorporated into the project and the meanings behind each symbolism. The elements of the skull, black ink, marker colored tubes, and plastic figurines.
Connecting the journey of human enlightenment and the brain, I drew upon concepts of traveling through space and negative emotions. In my work, I wanted to illustrate the path that is riddled with the negative thoughts and living continuum that life can take. The Skull and the black ink represented the relationship between the path in life and the actions taken by the brain. The tubes visualized the continuous loops that run between sections of the life time line. The figures of course were ways to represent the different persons at different aspects of a life.
The Base
Process
The fundamental structure was made up of three white boards.
1. Two 900 x 420 mm boards were measured and prepared
2. A square board for the base was prepared
3. The boards mentioned in the first step was then laid out so that squid ink could be applied.
Foam Skulls were purchased and cut according to size so that one could lie at the top and other at the bottom
1. Lettering stencils were applied to the skull with words that suggested conflicting both happy and sad moments memory would consist of
Base Alerations
Inspired by the "Skyfall" opening shot, where ink is used to portray the story of Agent 007 in the film, squid ink was used in a way to represent the life story.
Additives to the board followed in this step
1. Squid ink was splattered in a diagonal line from top right to bottom left.
2. The square board (bottom) was attached in place.
3. Squid Ink was then continued to represent the flow to the bottom and provide a 3 dimensional element.
4. Foam Skulls were attached to the board
5. Letter Stenciling was added to the now dried boards for wordings related to human emotions.
Decorative
To further accentuate the complex mind and portrayal of human enlightenment in regards with memory, more elements were added to create a higher understanding.
The tubes visualized the continuous loops that run between sections of the life time line.
1. Holes were drilled into the skulls to locate where the beginning and end points would lead
2. Tubes were colored with markers to provide a vibrancy of colors
3. Tubes were glued into the openings of the skulls the the intricate paths were taped down to provide a sense of random paths
The figures were ways to represent the different persons at different aspects of a life. Partially deriving from the Penrose staircase, in which they can be viewed as a loop of stairs with no end, figures were placed in many locations and many axis (x, y, z).
1. Figures were placed along strategic placements throughout the 3D structure
The stakes visualized certain places in which a significant change occurred.
1. Stakes were embedded into the structure
2. Thin and taut yarn was stretched between one stake to the next.
