Dehorn the Rhino

245 x 100 x 100

255 x 100 x 100

Location. Seoul

Category. Ceramics

Materials. Clay, Glaze, Shoe Laces

This shoe design was take on the inspiration of the Nike Cortez, a shoe with much history in the world of sneakers. As the first track shoe in the world revealed in the Mexico City Olympics, Nike has much to do with the exploitation of resources as the shoe was one of the reasons for why the company grew famous.

In my ceramic model of the shoe with a dehorned rhino, I wanted to illustrate the effects of human greed on the land resources of the world, especially in the direct implications on animals in which the world is shared. Coincidently, the white horn Rhino is extinct to the human actions of poaching at the time of writing this.

Process

Ceramic Process

1. The Nike Cortez was copied in terms of its measurements

2. Using a sponge to block the piece from collapsing, every part except the sole was made using clay

3. The sole was created from thick clay and attached to the rest of the shoe

4. A separate logo was created for the shoe

5. The rhino horns were also attached.

6. Heel tab, collar, toe cap, and tongue were attached to provide closer detail.

7. Holes were created in the eyeless for laces to be inserted.

Non-Ceramic

1. Metal brackets from a key ring was individually twisted and placed onto the holes in the eyleless

2. Laces were locked onto the key rings and tied together.
